Blepharoplasty in Memphis

Before and After Blepharoplasty Memphis

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is the fifth most popular form of cosmetic surgery. In fact, over 100,000 men and women in the United States undergo this procedure each year. Blepharoplasty is typically performed as an elective surgery for cosmetic reasons since drooping or sagging eyelids can often make one appear older. However, in some cases blepharoplasty surgery is needed for functional reasons. The ophthalmologists at MECA Eye and Laser Center can explain the surgical process and how each patient may benefit from the procedure.

What is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty, commonly referred to as eyelid surgery, reduces or eliminates the excess skin, muscle and fat, as well as removes puffiness and bags under the eyes. As we age, our eyelids slowly stretch, causing the muscles that support them to weaken. As a result, the skin may protrude over the eyelashes causing a loss of peripheral or side vision. Something as simple as reading, looking up or even driving a car may become a difficult task. If the upper skin folds interfere with normal vision, blepharoplasty surgery may be able to improve a patient’s vision while simultaneously turning worn and tired looking eyes into bright, younger, more alert-looking eyes.

Is Blepharoplasty Covered by Insurance?

When blepharoplasty is done purely for cosmetic reasons, it is not covered by insurance. However, if one’s vision is impaired, insurance may cover it.
